When it comes to design, most experts will tell you that texture is key. Sure, you can add natural fiber elements to a room via textiles or floor coverings, but if you really want to make a statement, consider incorporating it into your light fixtures.

“I love anything that brings in texture, so natural fiber lights are just another way to incorporate this important design element into your space,” Joyce Downing Pickens of JDP Interiors explains.

They can really work in a wide variety of styles, ranging from traditional and coastal to even modern.

These fixtures could be made out of everything from fabric to bamboo to wicker, and are traditionally considered a perfect addition to a bohemian space. But according to Mark Cutler, a Los Angeles-based interior designer, "They can really work in a wide variety of styles, ranging from traditional and coastal to even modern."

Here are some tips and inspiration to help you delve into the latest lighting trend.

A foolproof way to use a fiber light fixture is in rooms where it would otherwise lacks texture, like a kitchen, kitchen nook, or bathroom, according to Pickens. “A living room, for instance, may already have a woven rug or stool or some other element that brings in texture, so a woven pendant could potentially clash,” she points out.

Cutler loves to add natural fiber light fixtures to any space, but especially the obvious ruling design genre: boho chic. “It is all about natural, cool, laid back vibes,” he explains. This Justina Blakeny-designed tasseled lamp perfectly adds texture to this bohemian wonderland of a space.

04 Go Big—Without Going Heavy

“Natural fiber light fixtures are also great in places where the scale of the room demands a bigger fixture, but doing one in glass or metal would make the fixture too visually heavy or feel too important,” Cutler explains. “I love the semi-transparency of these pieces. It gives them a light and airy feeling that is difficult to find in other materials.”

05 Spend, But Don’t Splurge

“The biggest con with this light and open feel, though, is that it can be a big dust collector, and this will present a challenge getting and keeping them clean,” Cutler explains. “That is why I do not like to spend a lot of money on this type of light, and I can change out with a new, fresh one every year or so.”
